“What are you going to do?” Kai’s voice broke the silence that clung to the air between the pair like dense smog. The tale of woe took surprisingly little time to tell, but by the end it had sapped her of energy. With nothing left to give, the question hung in the ether. But he didn’t seem to mind the quiet, and Quill sensed the faint touch of his arm against hers. Eyes closed, she imagined absorbing energy through the minute point of contact and with relief, that soothed and she grew lighter, re-energised.

“Who knows?” said Quill, shoulders shrugging. “Can’t just sit around watching my entire life disintegrate. If the Master is guilty, it’ll mean losing everything. This might sound stupid, but I need to find any information that could prove his innocence. I don’t want to put you in an awkward position but wonder if you know anything about the Doctor and the Professor meeting up over the last few weeks?”

“Hey, I want to lend a hand, but I need this job. You can’t imagine how tough it’s been trying to find someone to give me a chance. If I help out, you need to promise to keep my name out of it.”

Kai was a contradiction, a boy hidden under an independent outer skin, worn as a coat of armour.

Embarrassed, she hadn’t even stopped to consider the consequences of involving him. So much for being more careful, “I’m so sorry, forget that I asked,.” Quill said and rose from the doorstep, preparing to leave.

Kai grasped her hand, pulling her backward. “Stop, why are you running away? I didn’t say I wouldn’t help.”

“I’m not running away. But I shouldn’t have expected you to get involved. That was selfish. You’re still a boy and a blind one at that. Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking,” Quill said, words tumbling out, unfiltered. To her dismay, she felt his grip loosen, the realisation of what she’d said hit home. But it was too late. The words couldn’t be unsaid.

The gap between the two widened into a yawning chasm and she wished, at that moment, to throw herself off the edge and free fall into space.

“If you’ve quite finished, I said I’d back you up and I will. I might be blind but I’m not useless.” Kai’s defiant statement cut through like a jagged blade and then plunged in deeper. “Why are you so angry? You do know that mark on your cheek isn’t a big deal? And, to be honest, it’s sort of well,” and then he added in a whisper, “beautiful.”

“What?” Quill asked, hand darting to cover cheek. “How? I assumed you couldn’t see me. I don’t understand,” she added, a hot flush creeping upward from the base of her neck.

“You’re right, mostly I can’t. But when we’re close, like this, in the daylight, I can make out contrasting colours and sometimes even shapes.”

“Why didn’t you say so before? You said you were blind,” she said, fighting back bitter tears.

“I am blind.
